Karyotype and morphology of mitotic chromosomes in six populations of the medicinal plant Papaver rhoeas collected from various geographical locations of the northwest of Iran were studied. Chromosome characteristics were measured from 10 complete metaphase cells using micromeasure software. The results showed that P. rhoeas is a diploid species with 2n=2x=14 chromosomes. The karyotype consisted of seven pairs of submetacentric chromosomes with one pairs of SAT chromosome (chromosome 2) having a secondary constriction at the end of its short arm. Karyological characteristics of all the materials studied were similar to each other; however, there were some variations on chromosome arm ratios and relative lengths among the different populations. All of the populations are placed on 4A class of Stebbin's asymmetry categories.

SummaryThe karyological characteristics of two Lilium species were investigated by acetoferric-hematoxylin staining. Chromosome characteristics, including the number and length of the chromosomes, length of their long and short arms, length of the total set of chromosomes, the arm ratio index and relative lengths of chromosome, were measured based on averages for five different metaphase cells. Both species are diploid (2n=2x=24). The karyotype of Lilium ledebourii consisted of 1 pair of metacentric, 4 pairs of submetacentric, 3 pairs of acrocentric and 4 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The karyotype of Lilium longiflorum was comprised of 1 pair of metacentric, 4 pairs of acrocentric and 7 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. Chromosomes 5 and 7 in Lilium ledebourii and chromosomes 6 in Lilium longiflorum had a satellite. Karyotypes were classified as 3A by Stebbins classification.

Summary Karyotype and morphology of mitotic chromosomes in four populations of medicinal plant Silybum marianum collected from various geographical locations of Iran and two cultivars of this species were studied. Chromosome characteristics were measured from 10 complete metaphase cells using Micromeasure software. Results showed that S. marianum is a diploid species with 2nϭ2xϭ34 chromosomes. The karyotype consisted of six pairs of metacentric, ten pairs of submetacentric, and one pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. One of the chromosomes (chromosome 1) had a secondary constriction on centromeric region of its short arm. Karyological characteristics of all materials studied were similar to each other, however, among different genotypes some variations were observed on chromosome arm ratios and relative lengths. According to Stebbin's asymmetry index, S. marianum is placed at 2B category.
