Abstract: Metal halide (MH) lamp is applied in light fishing purse seine (PS). This lamp have weaknesses like wasteful energy, it is necessary to replace with energy saving lamp. Light emitting diode (LED) is potential to replace the MH. The experimental method in order to obtain data on different light intensity, fuel consumption, and number of catch in PS fishing using MH and LED lamps as fish attractor. Light intensity observations were done on each of 6 MH and LED lamps in the distance of 0-17 m. The LED lamp had fo… Show more

“…The evaluation of the economic costs highlighted the positive impacts derived from LED technology on the operational costs of the PS fishery, with the fuel cost-saving percentages all being higher than 60%. This estimated value for LWH (64%) in our experiment was very similar to those obtained in experiments conducted between LED and fluorescent lamps (67% savings) in Vietnam [ 22 ] and between LED and metal halide lamps (64% savings) in the PS fleet of Indonesia [ 20 ]. However, a complete economic assessment should be performed considering device maintenance and fixed costs, to identify when the financial breaking point could be reached, thus obtaining profits for the fishing enterprise [ 67 ].…”

“…In this research field, an exemplary case is represented by the purse seine (PS) fishery operating with lamps to gather positive phototactic organisms (fishes and cephalopods), which is one of the most effective fishing techniques at the global scale [ 16 , 17 ]. This fishing technique is characterized by the involvement of a main vessel equipped with a purse seine net and smaller boats with lamps to attract fish during the night [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. High-power lamps illuminate the fishing zone for many hours, aggregating the schooling fish, which are then encircled by the purse seine net.…”

“…Fishing with lights is one of the activities that relate to lighting frequently. Current fishing practices need lights, which are also highly beneficial for fishing operations (Sofijanto et al, 2019). Fishermen use the lamp to attract fish and the lights used by fishermen are becoming more advanced as time goes on thanks to the usage of various types of lighting, including LED lights.…”

“…Generally, floating lights are those that fishermen have developed. Earlier researchers used operating methods directly touching the water's surface, such as taillights, floating lights, and floating led light buoys (Hartaty et al, 2012;Sofijanto et al, 2019).…”

“…The effusion value (lm/W) is relatively low compared to LED lamps [2]. The lighting pattern of MH lamps spreads in all directions [3]. The light needed to attract fish under the water surface is light that exposes the surface of the water [3].…”
