Lake Poso has high eel potential and a strategic position in supporting the development of eel fisheries in Sulawesi. Lake Poso is out of 15 national priority lakes in natural resources and environmental management programs. The catch of eel from Lake Poso is reported to have been decreasing for the last twenty years. Several factors causing the decline in eel populations are fishing activities, disruption in migration routes, and other factors such as changes in habitat and environmental conditions. The sustainability of the life of the Poso eel is determined by the success of the eel migration process. The migration of adult eels to the sea and young eels from glass eels to freshwater habitats must continue. The perspective plans that can be done to manage Poso's eel resources include 1) Socializing the eco-biological characteristics of eels as catadromous fish; 2) Establishing conservation areas and regulation of eel fishing; 3) Increasing eel population through restocking 4) Integrating fisheries and aquaculture activities; 5) Developing eel culture technology through size segmentation production; 6) Developing an eel migration monitoring system; 7) Building a cross-sectoral forum and put a joint action program; 8) Proposing the Poso eel Research and Conservation Center.

Fish biodiversity assessments are vital for understanding threats and aquatic ecosystem health. In the Poso River, Central Sulawesi, changes in biodiversity are influenced by habitat alteration, non-native species, and overfishing. This study evaluates fish and crustacean biodiversity in the Poso River system to address these challenges for improving fisheries management, conservation, and fish passage integration into hydropower development. The present biodiversity study utilized a comprehensive methodology that encompassed both traditional taxonomic approaches and DNA barcoding, specifically targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit-1 (COI) gene for accurate species identification and spatial boundary validation. The survey was conducted in the upstream, hydropower area and downstream areas of the river. We found 27 species of fish in the Poso River, including both native (e.g., Anguilla celebesensis, Oryzias nebulosus, Rhyacichthys aspro) and non-native species (e.g., Melanochromis auratus, Amphilophus trimaculatus, Oreochromis niloticus). Two International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red listed endangered species were also observed (e.g., Adrianichthys poptae and Mugilogobius sarasinorum). DNA barcoding was performed to examine species spatial boundaries. The fish population in the Poso River was dominated by non-native species, accounting for 85.70% of the total population. The upstream reaches had the highest fish abundance and diversity, while the downstream reaches had the lowest. There was, however, no significant difference in species richness and diversity across different locations and seasons. The dominance of non-native species in the Poso River necessitates the improvement of existing fishways within the hydropower dams potentially through the development of selective technology that can block the distribution of these non-native species. This research highlights the critical issue of non-native species proliferation and the potential threat they pose to native fish populations, providing valuable insights for conservation and management efforts in Indonesia and similar ecosystems worldwide.

Eel (Anguilla sp.) is one of the fish that is spread in the world into 18 types with the order Anguilliformes. Eel have a Catalan life cycle pattern which means to start living in the sea, then grow up in freshwater and return to the sea to spawn. Cimandiri River is one of the watersheds where there are many eel fish stocks and has the potential to meet the needs of eel fishing activities. Freshwater eel found in the Cimandiri River are dominated by Anguilla bicolor and Anguilla marmorata fish species. Glas eel activities in the Cimandiri River are quite massive because the high demand for enlargement companies can have an impact on the occurrence of overfishing at estuary. Community activities in agriculture both upstream and downstream can also have an impact on the sustainability of freshwater eel resources in the Cimandiri River. Sand mining carried out by the community for business and house construction as well as lack of awareness in the community can also have an impact on environmental damage. The government has imposed several rules in the management of freshwater eel in support of conservation efforts. As a form of efforts in the management of freshwater eel can be carried out, namely through an approach in realizing area management, preventing conflicts in resource utilization between sectors and environmental damage. This study aims to examine the management strategy of the eel fishing area in the Cimandiri River based on stadia. The research was conducted at the eel fishing site, both estuary, middle and upper reaches of the Cimandiri River. Data collection of respondents perpetrators of eel arrest activities and related stakeholders as key informants was carried out through in-depth interviews. The results showed that in the management of eel fish in the Cimandiri River has aggressive strategy that makes the best use of every opportunity that exists. Environmental management strategies in an effort to optimize the Cimandiri River include: making programs and policies to release (stocking) eel at least stadia yellow eel or adults for the sustainability of freshwater eel resources, increasing cooperation with the community to achieve the protection of freshwater eel habitats, and improving the quality of human resources in maintaining river sustainability.
