Keratopigmentation (corneal tattooing) for the management of visual disabilities of the eye related to iris defects

“…The therapeutic effect of corneal tattooing has also been evaluated in patients with symptomatic glare associated with iris loss, atrophy or trauma4–6 11–13; in cases of disabling light scattering14 and photophobia in traumatic aniridia or iris coloboma6 14–16; and even in the treatment of incapacitating diplopia,12 17 showing that this procedure is used in blind eyes but can also be used in sighted eyes for therapeutic reasons 12 17…”

“…After reviewing the tolerance and biocompatibility of micronised mineral pigments for KTP,1 12 13 16 17 the aim of our study is to investigate in an experimental animal model the potential of corneal tattooing using these pigments for cosmetic reasons. We also sought to demonstrate the safety, tolerance and medium-term durability of this procedure.…”

“…1,2 Recently, KTP has also been reported to restore functional visual symptoms related to iris defects [3][4][5][6] and even intractable diplopia. 7 Dilated and areflexic pupils with an atrophic iris are serious conditions with irritating and even incapacitating photophobia for young patients.…”

“…We read with great interest the article on keratopigmentation by Alio et al , and the letter on the subject by Segal et al 1 2 Corneal tattooing under a lamellar pocket was described more than 25 years ago, but the manual technique described by Alio et al seems to be easier, and when using a femtosecond laser, it is even more surgeon-friendly 3. They published very good results that are undoubtedly related to their adequate technique, but also may be related to the nature of the dye (mineral micronised pigments).…”

“…They also reported good results in 40 patients in whom keratopigmentation was performed with cosmetic purposes 5. We have some comments about their recent publication1: in table 1 it is not indicated what notation was used to measure visual acuity and if this value corresponds to best corrected visual acuity. It would be clearer to indicate the average and range of actual follow-up duration instead of indicating a planned period of 1 year.…”
