This study compares the social sustainability of urban renewal interventions in Hungary and South Africa. The societal and environmental challenges arising from urbanisation and the associated population growth in major urban centres around the world have increased the research and policy foci on urban sustainability and governance. While urban regeneration projects are vitally important to urban sustainability, these interventions have been widely criticised because social sustainability issues have been overlooked or ignored. Therefore, there is a need for governance practices that are applicable to different national and urban contexts. The main aim of this study is twofold: firstly, it provides a literature review on the social sustainability of urban renewal and secondly, it compares urban renewal interventions in two different geographical settings to provide recommendations about public participation and stakeholder involvement, which can contribute to increasing social sustainability of urban renewal projects. To this end, a comparative approach was adopted through the analysis of two urban renewal projects: Magdolna Quarter Programme (Budapest, Hungary) and the Albert Park (Durban, South Africa), the data for which were based on a review of secondary sources, including international literature and policy documents. It was found that although urban renewal serves a city-wide purpose (and not just a local one), the socio-economic impacts of these projects have not yet been adequately explored. Furthermore, to achieve higher urban renewal sustainability, there is a need for impact assessments (with special attention paid to the social effects) to promote public participation and empowerment.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify 30 government-led critical success factors (CSFs) from both the meso and micro levels in public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure development, measured the importance of these factors, and evaluated the government performance within the Indonesian context. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used weighted gap analysis, the Mann-Whitney test, and the Holland and Copenhaver procedure to support the analysis. Findings – The agreement-adjusted mean scores suggest that the identified CSFs are essential, but that these CSFs underperform in Indonesia. The tests indicated that the gap between performance and importance was significant on both the individual and aggregate level, and no respondent-background bias was observed in the data sets. Practical implications – This paper provides valuable information for prospective international investors who might be interested in alternative PPP investment opportunities in Indonesia. Originality/value – This paper enriches the existing body of knowledge on Indonesia’s PPP activities. This is important as, despite the fact that Indonesia offers one of the largest opportunities in Asia for investment in the national infrastructure sector, studies on Indonesia’s PPPs are rarely reported in the literature. This paper also offers a simple, practical, and replicable approach with a sound theoretical basis that can assist governments in identifying and evaluating PPP-specific determinant factors under their control, as well as in measuring their performance on these factors.

Recently, efforts to promote equity development and reduce the rural-urban gap have been made, such as the development of optimizing rural tourism to increase job opportunities, therefore improving overall rural economic conditions. Agritourism presents the best chance for rural areas to sustainably develop as it would fulfill environmental, economic, and social wellbeing when properly implemented. This research aimed to develop rural tourism that utilizes local culture and resources while prioritizing sustainable development in Pujon Kidul, Malang Regency, Indonesia. Qualitative descriptive methods were adopted for this study and included land suitability analysis with Visual Absorption Capability (VAC), community attitude analysis with Irridex, linkage system and integrated system. Proper rural tourism management that considers environmental, social, and economic aspects may prevent the exploitation of available resources and thus promote sustainable development in a rural context.
