Kinetic and magnetic measurements on the radical decomposition of a cobalt oxygen carrier

Abstract: Paramagnetic complexes of Co(I1) acetate with arnine ligands absorb irreversibly molecular oxygen. The adducts are diamagnetic and decompose thermally, via a radical mechanism, to paramagnetic Co(I1) species. Oxygen absorption can be repeated after addition of fresh amine. The time dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the kinetics of free radical polymerization of styrene, initiated by the radicals, permit an insight into the mechanistic features of the decomposition. “…Thus, more ethanol means stronger interactions with MAA molecules. Consequently, the overall rate of polymerization would be lower with more ethanol since the propagation can only take place if the propagating macroradical is in the vicinity of the monomer molecules [23]. Furthermore, the uniform distribution of TEGDMA and radicals increases the distance between radicals and free vinyls or pendant vinyls, resulting in a high extent of intramolecular cyclization and the formation of smaller microgels.…”

“…The influence of the ligand on the strength of metal-carbon bond and on the course of the reaction is well explained by Olive and Olive. 13 It is known that the growth step starting from a configuration in which a monomer is coordinated to a transition metal proceeds via a polar, four-center transition state. There is kinetic evidence that both chain growth and /3-hydrogen transfer reactions start from the same configuration.12 A polar, six-centered transition state including a monomer, a-carbon, /3-carbon, and one /3-H of the growing chain attached to the same metal center leading to /3-hydrogen abstraction is suggested.…”
