This study presents a conceptual classification scheme to review the literature on improving the oxidation resistance of tungsten carbide by modifying the binder. The first parts of the article are dedicated to the specification of the databases, the search method, and the description of the criteria chosen to classify the articles. Then, the data collected are presented in statistical graphs according to the proposed classification scheme. The data analyzed show that most of the significant improvements in oxidation resistance are achieved with advanced production processes, especially HIP and SPS, which eliminate porosity to a very high degree. In addition, statistical studies showed that the use of new replacement binders, Ni3Al, Fe–based alloys, FeAl, and Al2O3, improved the oxidation properties in 75–100% of cases. Meanwhile, the use of high–entropy alloys (HEAs) as cermet binders may be the subject of future research for oxidation, given the recently published results of good mechanical properties.

This study presents non-isothermal analysis of the oxidation behavior of tungsten carbide 20% cobalt powder. This was done to further understand and quantitatively model of this process. The effect of heating rate from 5 to 20 °C/min on the oxidation behavior was examined. The specimens were heated in air from ambient temperature up to 1000 °C using the aforementioned heating rates. XRD was used to assess the phases present in the original powder as well as specimens heated to different temperatures. The phases present in the green powder were WC, W2C and metallic cobalt, while the phases appearing at 600 °C were WC, WO3 and CoWO4 and those present at 1000 °C were WO3 and CoWO4. Kinetic calculations were carried out, the value of activation energy was calculated at different conversions using the Flyn -Wall -Osawa method, and the average value was about (255 kJ/mole). The corresponding activation energy values calculated by the Coats -Redfern method were lower (140 kJ /mole).

The kinetics of the high-temperature oxidation of titanium-tantalum carbonitridebased cermets with different Ti/Ta ratios was studied. Isothermal oxidation tests were conducted under static air for 48 h at temperatures between 700ºC and 1200ºC. The oxidation satisfied the parabolic kinetics, characteristic of the existence of a protective oxide layer. The apparent activation energy suggests the rate-controlling process during oxidation is the simultaneous inward and outward diffusion of oxygen and titanium, respectively, through the formed protective layer, consisting mainly of a rutile phase. A higher Ta(V) content in the rutile decreased the oxygen diffusivity due to the reduction of oxygen vacancy concentration.
