This paper explores activist art's potential in promoting environmental awareness and community engagement, drawing from the International Socially Engaged Art Symposium (ISEAS). Focused on a Western Lapland ISEAS event, the study highlights art workshops addressing forest use conflicts facilitated by artist-scientist teams. These workshops offer a secure space for participants to express environmental concerns, fostering creative expression and dialogue. The study suggests that art-based interventions powerfully promote environmental awareness and community engagement by creating safe spaces for collaborative dialogue. Through ISEAS experiences, the paper demonstrates how activist art facilitates meaningful community engagement, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental challenges.

Lukemisen merkitystä perustellaan usein sillä, että se edistää tunnetaitoja ja kykyä omaksua uusia asioita. Näihin oletettuihin vaikutuksiin perustuu osin myös viime aikoina suosioon noussut ilmastofiktio, joka pyrkii herättämään empatiaa ei-inhimillistä luontoa kohtaan ja tekemään ymmärrettäväksi laajamittaisia ympäristömuutoksia. Tulevaisuuteen sijoittuvien ilmastofiktioiden ajatellaan auttavan eläytymään siihen, mitä ympäristön tuhoutuminen voi tarkoittaa ihmisyksilöiden ja kokonaisten yhteiskuntien kannalta. Ekokriittinen kirjallisuudentutkimus on tutkinut kaunokirjallisuutta ihmisen ja luonnon välisen suhteen sekä ympäristönsuojelun näkökulmista. Vielä ei kuitenkaan ole juurikaan tutkittua tietoa siitä, miten kaunokirjallisuus vaikuttaa lukijoiden ajatuksiin ja tunteisiin ei-inhimillisestä luonnosta. Koneen Säätiön rahoittama ja Toni Lahtisen johtama Kirjallisuus ja lukeminen ilmastokriisin aikakaudella -hanke (Helsingin yliopisto, 2021–2024) tarttuu tähän kysymykseen ja selvittää, miten nuoret lukevat ilmastonmuutosta käsitteleviä fiktioita ja miten kirjallisuutta sekä luovaa kirjoittamista voidaan käyttää osana ympäristökasvatusta.

Climate change evokes different emotions in people. Recently, climate emotions have become a matter of normative scrutiny in the public debate. This phenomenon, which we refer to as the normativization of climate emotions, manifests at two levels. At the individual level, people are faced with affective dilemmas, situations where they are genuinely uncertain about what is the right way to feel in the face of climate change. At the collective level, the public debate reflects disagreement about which climate emotions are appropriate to feel. The aim of this paper is to examine the normative reasons in favour of different climate emotions by combining normative criteria from philosophy and psychology. We conclude that these criteria provide partial reasons for or against different climate. Emotional disagreement in climate contexts may generate
