Knowledge and Practices Regarding Aedes Control Amongst Residents of Dengue Hotspot Areas in Selangor: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Dengue fever is endemic and remains a public health concern in Malaysia. The highest number of dengue cases occurred in Selangor in 2015. The majority of hotspot and outbreak areas in Malaysia were located in residential areas. Despite the high number of dengue prevalence in Malaysia, evidence for the level of community knowledge and practice of methods for Aedes control and prevention in the country remains scant. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the demographic factors associated with the knowledge… Show more

“…Based on our analysis using data collected by mosquito population monitoring approaches, climatic factors may also contribute to the changes of mosquito population in the environment. Climatic factors are essential to the dynamics of mosquitoes in the epidemiological trend related to the transmission of diseases [31]. Temperature is usually associated with the effects on the viability of egg, larval development, longevity, and adult dispersal, whereas rainfalls affect the productivity of the mosquitoes and abundance of the species [3233].…”

“…However, the best vector control strategy is to combine source reduction methods, law enforcement and controlling the use of insecticide usage, which are crucial for the successful of the program [18]. The responsible agencies should prepare several strategies on mosquito management such as performing location assessment, insecticide treatment, educating the public, establishing the policy and regulation, conducting mosquito surveillance and utilizing new technologies [19,20]. World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a concept of Integrated Vector Management to optimize the use of resources in the management of vector programs.…”
