Knowledge-based functional conceptual design: Model, representation, and implementation

Abstract: Conceptual design is thus crucial to define new creative products. During conceptual design process, knowledge derivate from different domains is required to achieve a creative design. However, most of the design models restrict their representation to a specific domain. Knowledge representation for multidisciplinary is still an incipient issue for engineering design researchers. Moreover, to increase the robustness of design resolutions is another problem obsessing designers. This article proposes an adapted … Show more

“…Table 4 presents the comparison of the proposed method and other related methods, for example, traditional CBR (TCBR; Yang & Chen, 2011), multiagent based CBR (MCBR; Epstein et al, 2013), genetic algorithm based CBR (GCBR; Yang & Wang, 2008), requirement function behavior principle solutions (Ma et al, 2013), and CFKM based CBR (Hu et al, 2012). Table 4 shows that MCBR, GCBR, CFKM and the proposed method perform better than TCBR in all evaluation indexes.…”

“…Furthermore, design being a cognitive process (Ma et al, 2013), it also involves logical reasoning and complex cognitive operations in which knowledge plays a key role. This knowledge can be of different nature, including technical or organisational, declarative or procedural, theoretical or resulting from practice.…”
