psychoneuro 2008; 34 (8): 350-354 354 Schwerpunkt Co-morbid psychic disorders in primary headache disorders -Frequency and relevance in clinical practicePatients with migraine and tension-type headache are at greater risk for psychic co-morbid disorders (e. g. anxiety disorders and/or depression) compared to the general population. Additionally, with regard to the development of chronic headache or resistance to therapy, psychatric comorbidity represents, among others, a relevant risk factor. They can influence the frequency of attacks, coping styles, the impact of prophylactic treatment as well as the risk for the development of medication overuse headache. There is substantial evidence for these associations based on population-based and clinical studies and neurobiological findings.
