The Brantas River is the longest in East Java. One of the areas included in the flow of the Brantas River is the Jombang Regency. The Jombang Brantas River is used by the community to meet their daily needs in agriculture, plantations, industry, and fishing grounds. The input of waste generated from several community activities will result in the survival of fish in the waters. Fish as a biomarker agent is quite significant in estimating the level of heavy metal pollution. Red Bader Fish (Barbonymus altus) is often found and lives around the Jombang Brantas River. This study aims to determine the condition of the aquatic environment by observing the health of the fish through hematological observations of the Red Bader Fish (B. altus). Sampling was carried out at three stations with three replications every two weeks, which was carried out in February – March 2022 in the Jombang Brantas River. Data analysis used the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) method as an analytical method to determine the correlation between the dependent variable (hematological profile) and the independent variable (water quality conditions). In this study, the results showed that the water quality at Station 1 and Station 2 was classified as normal, while at Station 3, it was classified as polluted. Data analysis showed that erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and hematocrit had a relationship with temperature, pH, DO, BOD, ammonia, TSS, and TDS in low concentrations. Meanwhile, leukocytes and micronuclei showed a relationship with high concentrations of ammonia, BOD, TDS, and TSS.

Lake Menjer is one of the crater lakes located in the highland of Central Java, Indonesia, which has received multiple stressors from anthropogenic activities. Benthic macroinvertebrates as a key indicator for water quality were little known there. Thus, this present research aimed to identify benthic macroinvertebrate structures and to understand the response of this community to water quality in Lake Menjer. Samplings were conducted twice, one week each in August and October 2019 at five sites. Sampling in August represented the condition of the dry season, while in October represented the rainy season. Some groups were identified into the family and others into the genus level. Water quality variables were measured directly on the site, including water clarity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Meanwhile, the level of total nitrate (TN), total phosphate (TP), nitrite, and chlorophyll-a were analyzed separately. A total of 4312 benthic macroinvertebrates composed of eleven taxa belonging to eight families were recorded, namely Chironomidae (22.85%), Tubificidae (73.50%), Lumbricullidae (0.68%), Thiariidae (0.21%), Planorbidae (0.45%), Lymnaeidae (0.21%), Unionidae (0.92%), and Corbiculidae (1.13%). The number of taxa varied between 1 to 3 in each station. Mollusk was the best-represented group with five families. Meanwhile, Tubificidae was shown as the predominant family in abundance both in August (3879 ind/m2) and October (2008 ind/m2). Shannon-Wiener index ranged nearly similar between the two seasons, 0.17 to 0.91 in August and 0.0 to 0.91 in October. ANOSIM CAP6 result illustrated that there was an insignificant difference in benthic macroinvertebrates abundance (P below 0.05) among sampling sites in Lake Menjer. This community was mostly homogenous. Bray-Curtis analysis using MVSP shows similarities in the taxa compositions between the sites. The analysis between water quality and macroinvertebrates which was performed by Canonical Correspondence Analysis shows that nine taxa tended to correlate with the level of TN, DO, and conductivity. Meanwhile, the other two taxa had a relationship with water clarity, temperature, level of TP, nitrite, and chlorophyll-a.

‘Situ’ Lotus and ‘Situ’ Cibuntu are small ponds located in urban areas at Cibinong Science Center-Botanical Garden, National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia. This study was conducted to determine the development of the introduced freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium lanchesteri in that ponds. Observations were carried out in January and February 2019. There are four sampling points in each pond. The number of shrimp obtained at Lotus Pond is more than Cibuntu Pond. The average total length and weight of shrimp obtained at Lotus Pond during the first observation were 1.61 – 2.55 cm and 0.07 – 0.20 gram, while the second was 1.67 – 2.27 cm and 0.11 – 0.31 gram. Meanwhile, M. lanchesteri obtained at Cibuntu Pond in the first observation had an average total length of 2.20 – 2.63 cm and weight 0.16 – 0.20 gram; and when the second sampling was 2.27 – 3.00 cm and 0.16 – 0.34 gram. Proximate analysis of shrimp from Cibuntu Pond showed that this shrimp’s protein, fat, ash, crude fiber, and carbohydrate content were 58.68%; 10.70%; 15.31%; 7.70%, and 7.61%, respectively. The water quality observed in both ponds is still good and can support the shrimp’s life. Utilization of this shrimp as an alternative source of protein can be done if pond water quality is always maintained in the future.
