Koppen–Trewartha climate classification as a diagnostic tool to identify pronounced changes in the projected climate by the General Circulation Models over India

Abstract: Earth's changing climate will pose a major threat to terrestrial ecosystems in their present state of equilibrium that support human habitats. Understanding the underlying aspects of climate change that influence ecosystems is crucial to devise adaptation strategies and conservation efforts. To this end, climate classification schemes can be employed as an effective means for both validation of climate models and identify areas that may experience a pronounced shift in climate in the future. In this context, t… Show more

“…In‐accordance with the Koppen‐Trewartha (K‐T) classification system, the Bhopal site enjoys a subtropical winter dry (Cwa) climate, while Mesra and Mysuru were in the sub‐tropical humid (Cfa) climatic zone. The K‐T classification is based on monthly precipitation and temperature values from historical observational data sets and future climate data sets (Bindhu et al., 2021). The average mean sea level elevation was 486 m in Bhopal, 517 m in Mesra, and 759 m in Mysuru (Figure 1a).…”

“…Indeed, precise knowledge of the climatic heterogeneity of the planet is necessary, for example, for global vegetation studies (Kelly and Goulden, 2008; Zhang et al ., 2017a; Song et al ., 2018), potential species distribution (Sunday et al ., 2012; Garcia et al ., 2014; Lenoir et al ., 2020; Calatayud et al ., 2021), water management (Caracciolo et al ., 2018; Knoben et al ., 2018; Papagiannopoulou et al ., 2018), and landscape analysis (Box, 2016; Ergüner et al ., 2019; Guan et al ., 2020). Climate classification systems are also used to visualize the present climate (Kottek et al ., 2006; Peel et al ., 2007; Chen and Chen, 2013; Belda et al ., 2014; Rohli et al ., 2015a) and quantify future changes in climate types as predicted by climate models (Rubel and Kottek, 2010; Elguindi et al ., 2014; Feng et al ., 2014; Beck et al ., 2018; Bindhu et al ., 2021).…”
