This study aims to examine whether emotional exhaustion has a mediating role in the effect of economic anxiety of tour guides on their affective occupational commitment. The research sample included 370 tour guides in Turkey. The data were collected through the questionnaire method. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 22 and Process v3.3 macro extension. The mediating role of emotional exhaustion between economic anxiety and affective occupational commitment was calculated via the Bootstrapping procedure. It was found that there was a weak negative relationship between economic anxiety and affective occupational commitment, a positive relationship between economic anxiety and emotional exhaustion, and a negative relationship between affective occupational commitment and emotional exhaustion. Thus, emotional exhaustion reduces affective occupational commitment levels, and emotional exhaustion has a partial mediating role between economic anxiety and affective occupational commitment. This study is expected to raise awareness in tour guides, attract those who employ tour guides, and contribute to the relevant literature.

Turizm sektörü dışsal faktörlere bağımlı bir sektör olma özelliğinden dolayı salgın hastalıklar, terör gibi birçok olaydan hemen etkilenebilmektedir. 2020 yılında yaşanılan pandemi süreci hem turizmi hem de turizme bağlı meslekleri önemli ölçüde etkilemiştir. Özellikle gelecekte bu meslekleri icra etmek isteyen öğrencilerin düşüncelerinin önemli olması nedeniyle bu çalışmada turist rehberliği öğrencilerinin pandemi sonrası turizmin ve turist rehberliği mesleğinin geleceğine yönelik bakış açıları belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda yapılan çalışma 16.07-30.07.2020 tarihleri arasında online gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat tekniği ve tesadüfi olmayan örneklem yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda, öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun bu süreçten psikolojik açıdan olumsuz etkilendiği, kendilerini karamsar ve kaygılı hissettikleri belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin bir kısmı bu durumu sağlığın tehdit edildiği, çaresiz insanların öldüğü, ölümün hatırlandığı, aniden planlarının değişmek durumunda kaldığı ya da geleceğe yönelik olan planlarını ertelemek durumunda kaldıkları, özgürlüklerin kısıtlandığı ve insanlara korku veren bir süreç olarak tanımlamaktadır. Öğrencilerin bir başka bölümü bu süreçte derslere motive olamadıklarını da belirtmişlerdir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin başka bir kısmı ise bu süreçte kaygılı olmasına rağmen ümitli ve gelişim odaklı olduklarını belirtmişlerdir. Bir kısım katılımcı ise kaygılarından uzaklaşarak bilinçlendiklerini ve daha da geliştiklerini dile getirmektedirler. Öğrenciler önceden değer vermedikleri hatta hatırlamadıkları birçok konuda farkındalık sahibi olduklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin ağırlıklı oranda turizmin geleceğine olan bakış açısının olumsuz olduğu ve %45 oranında turist rehberliğinin geleceğini olumsuz %38 oranında ise olumlu olarak değerlendirdikleri tespit edilmiştir.

The Effects of Earthquakes on Tourism: Evidence from Turkey

Turkey has been hit by many earthquakes during the last century. A 7.4 earthquake that lasted for 45 seconds struck the Marmara Region on 17 August 1999 at 3:02 am. In addition to its destructive effects such as property losses and personal injuries, it also had negative effects on the tourism industry. The cancellation of package tours for foreign tourists in Turkey had a negative impact on travel agencies, hotels and airlines. The purpose of the present study is to outline the economic impact of the 1999 Earthquake on tourist flows. For this purpose, an event study was performed to evaluate the amount of loss between August 1998 and August 2001 due to the drop in the tourism industry. Additionally, the CUSUM and CUSUMSQ test, multiple linear regression (MLR) model and prediction models were employed to identify the patterns of structural change. The results show that the number of tourists decreased by about 20% following the earthquake. The results of the CUSUM and CUSUMSQ estimation analysis based on the control variables suggest that if there had been no earthquakes, the number of future tourists would have been approximately 8% higher than the actual number of tourists who visited Turkey at that time.
