Abstract: Le canal de Suez est une des grandes réussites du XIX e siècle. Fort de son premier succès, Ferdinand de Lesseps a souhaité faire une seconde tentative, qui paraissait, après une analyse superficielle, d'autant plus réalisable que la distance à creuser à Panama était moindre. Mais alors que Suez était une région connue des Européens, Panama était l'inconnu.
