For about fifteen years now, so-called leaderless movements, often stemming from appeals via social networks and having recourse to lasting or episodic occupations of public spaces have flourished. This has had the effect of calling into question the usual toolkit used by social movement scholars to study them. More precisely, it is a question of which levels, dimensions and units of analysis are relevant, especially when it comes to describe movements’ social base and worldviews. In this paper, based on a localized and a long-term collective undertaking, begun from the very beginning of the Yellow Vests movement in November 2018, we discuss those shortcomings and suggest avenues for analysis. We rely on three sets of data in a concomitant manner: life history calendars, social media data (mainly Facebook) and field research (participant observation and biographical interviews). By considering time and place as key variables, we offer an innovative way to describe how the YVs movement has been constructed in a constant flux of change.

El artículo propone un conjunto de reflexiones críticas sobre la gestión tecno-experta de la pandemia del covid-19. Apoyándose en las dos grandes estrategias espaciales de prevención puestas en práctica, los confinamientos y los distanciamientos, el texto no se interesa ni en los diferenciales de resultados obtenidos a nivel nacional, ni en las razones que llevaron a su implementación. Lo que se analiza son los presupuestos y los imaginarios sociales subyacentes a las decisiones tomadas, la homogeneidad de las medidas que fueron generalizadas con muy escasa atención hacia los contextos locales, y los ideales de sociabilidad que se movilizaron. Se destaca, sobre todo, la tensión entre lo presencial y lo virtual, entre una sociabilidad fundada en la interacción y una sociabilidad que tendencialmente se concibe desde la conectividad generalizada, y la manera en que ello rediseña potencialmente toda una nueva jerarquía social de oficios y de actividades. Es este conjunto dispar de imaginarios, tendencias y medidas que el artículo critica por su carácter anti-sociológico y descontextualizado

The Front National is the prime example of anti-systemic and populist party in France. But in the 2000s, La France Insoumise on the far left also developed a rhetoric that could fall into this category yet without sharing the ideology of far-right party. Reinvestigating previous studies, we may ask if the populist concept make sense to understand populism in France? Thus following a systemic field analysis, we study variations in the discourse of these two parties during campaigning and routine periods by analyzing the Facebook posts of their two leaders. They do not use the same strategies and, variations between the two periods highlight two different uses of populist rhetoric in addition to their two opposed ideologies. This paper discusses the relevance of the notion by stressing the need to think about populism within a systemic approach in the French political field that partly explains its spread to almost all parties.
