AimsTo shed light on the process of advocacy in the context of community health nursing, through a methodology inspired by the epistemologies of the South.DesignWe conducted a collaborative ethnography in a community health centre in Canada.Methodsde Sousa Santos' epistemologies of the South, a typology of advocacy and main themes from historic research informed the methodology. Data were collected between 2016 and 2018 through 420 h of fieldwork observations and three group discussions, including a collective process to co‐construct interpretations with participants. Twenty‐one nurses participated in the study.ResultsNurses had sufficient work flexibility to practice advocacy actions focused on individuals and groups. They also engaged in attempts at policy reform in the form of defending access to appropriate care and changing the mode of care organization. However, these were curbed by bureaucracy and administrative rules, resulting in the eventual dismissal of health promotion actions and experiences of moral distress.ConclusionDespite the political climate of their work environment impeding social justice agendas, nurses' advocacy practices showed a persistence of moral values and ideals in coherence with the regional nursing legacy.Implications for the Profession and/or Patient CareActing at the organizational level and involving field nurses in decision making are potential avenues for increasing policy advocacy efficacy.ImpactExamining contexts through another epistemic lens and methods of research drawing on history and anthropology has shed light on a process of advocacy. Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur les pratiques d’intervention et les modalités d’accompagnement déployées par des praticiens de la relation d’aide chargés de répondre à la mission compromise de « rendre capables » des jeunes souffrant de troubles mentaux. Élaborée principalement à partir de données qualitatives issues d’entretiens réalisés avec une cinquantaine de professionnels du champ de l’insertion et du soin en Suisse et au Québec, cette étude sociologique compréhensive montre, par un montage constitué via une démarche comparative continue, comment ces praticiens rencontrent ce que nous nommons des embarras professionnels. Ces embarras se concentrent autour de trois lieux communs émergeant des terrains enquêtés : dans la relation avec les jeunes, dans les manières de les catégoriser et aux frontières, interinstitutionnelles d’une part, et interprofessionnelles d’autre part. La mise en relief des différents embarras professionnels dégagés de l’analyse instruit les principaux défis pragmatiques rencontrés par les praticiens. Ces défis du quotidien mettent non seulement en jeu leur professionnalité mais viennent aussi questionner le sens et la finalité donnés à leur métier. Bien plus que de ponctuels ou d’exceptionnels difficultés d’agir, la thèse soutient que les embarras professionnels font partie intégrante de l’activité professionnelle de ces différents acteurs de l’insertion dans le contexte contemporain. Plus que cela encore, ils sont constitutifs de leurs métiers. En conséquence, dans la thèse, il est défendu l’idée selon laquelle les praticiens usent de tactiques, de manières de faire implicites, de tours de main qui s’inscrivent dans ce que nous appréhendons comme un paradigme interventionnel de l’entre-deux pour tenter, tant bien que mal, de composer avec les embarras rencontrés et de répondre au mandat prescrit. L’usage de la prudence en se gardant d’entretenir une certaine ouverture des possibles visant, en outre, à éviter les échecs et les ruptures relationnelles, la convocation de pratiques ingénieuses au service d’un travail permanent de négociation avec de multiples interlocuteurs et un phénomène de redistribution des savoirs et des responsabilités entre l’ensemble des acteurs impliqués dans les suivis des jeunes forment les trois axes/ressources qui composent ce paradigme interventionnel de l’entre-deux. Considérant avec sérieux ces modalités intermédiaires et fluctuantes d’agir, cet écrit doctoral propose, finalement, en important la notion anthropologique de liminalité dans le champ de l’intervention sociale, la conceptualisation d’un agir liminal que la divinité marine, Protée, qui change constamment d’apparence, personnifie entièrement. Cette pratique donne à penser certaines propriétés de l’exercice du travail social dans le contexte contemporain et invite, par ailleurs, à ouvrir la réflexion sur le sort réservé aux jeunes accompagnés.
