Breaking Down the Bilingual Cost in Speech Production

Bilinguals have been shown to perform worse than monolinguals in a variety of verbal tasks. The current study investigated this bilingual verbal cost in a large-scale picture naming study conducted in Spanish. We explored how individual characteristics of the participants and the linguistic properties of the words being spoken influence this performance cost. In particular, we focused on the contributions of lexical frequency and phonological similarity across translations. The naming performance of Spanish-Catalan bilinguals speaking in their dominant and non-dominant language was compared to that of Spanish monolinguals. Single trial naming latencies were analyzed by means of linear mixed models accounting for individual effects at the participant and item level. While decreasing lexical frequency was shown to increase naming latencies in all groups, this variable by itself did not account for the bilingual cost. In turn, our results showed that the bilingual cost disappeared when naming words with high phonological similarity across translations. In short, our results show that frequency of use can play a role in the emergence of the bilingual cost, but that phonological similarity across translations should be regarded as one of the most important variables that determine the bilingual cost in speech production. Low phonological similarity across translations yields worse performance in bilinguals and promotes the bilingual cost in naming performance. The implications of our results for the effect of phonological similarity across translations within the bilingual speech production system are discussed.

ResumoEste trabalho faz uma análise do tratamento dado ao polimorfismo em verbetes de substantivos em dicionários gerais monolíngues de orientação semasiológica da tradição lexicográfica hispânica. Nosso objetivo é avaliar tal questão nessas obras não apenas em relação com a presença, disposição e localização das informações, mas também no tocante aos critérios empregados para se estabelecer as formas type e token. Para tal análise, lançamos mão, entre outros, dos postulados de Porto Dapena, Hausmann e Wiegand. Os resultados indicam que os dicionários analisados não se baseiam em um programa constante de informações (PCI) para a abordagem e apresentação estratégica das informações relativas às variantes ortográficas. AbstractThis paper presents an analysis of the treatment given to polymorphism in entries of nouns in General monolingual dictionaries of semasiological orientation of the Hispanic lexicographical tradition. The goal of this research is to evaluate this issue in these works not only in relation to the presence, arrangement and location of the information, but also as regards the criteria used to establish the "type" and "token" items. For this analysis, the postulates of Porto Dapena, Hausmann and Wiegand were used as theoretical framework, although not exclusively. The results indicate that the analyzed dictionaries are not based on a microstructural information program (PCI, in Portuguese) to treat and strategically organize the information relating to spelling variants. This, necessarily, ends up compromising the quality of many segments of the lexicographical microstructure, which may turn out to provide little or no functional information to potential users.

Archaeological research in Catalonia: projects 2014-2022

When trying to understand the development of a scientific field, analysing its capacity of funding attraction is key; in this sense, the study of archaeological research in Catalonia has often been neglected. To address this gap, in this study we examine the funding landscape of Catalan archaeology research by collecting data from public calls during the period of 2014-2022. Our objective is to provide a thorough descriptive analysis that delineates the trajectory of archaeological research funding in Catalonia, thus enhancing our understanding of its current status. Our findings reveal the impact of the 2008 economic recession during the first half of the period, followed by a gradual recovery and a slow increase of the funding from 2019 onwards. However, it is not until 2021 that it will equal or surpass pre-recession levels. Prehistory emerges as the chronocultural period predominantly studied in projects, with a primary focus on site and territory studies, particularly within the Catalan, Spanish and Mediterranean contexts. Most of the projects are financed by the programmes of the Department of Culture of the autonomous government of Catalonia, although the largest volume of financing comes from European research calls. Our research identifies three universities (Universitat de Barcelona [UB], Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona [UAB], and Universitat Pompeu Fabra [UPF]) and two research centres (Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social [IPHES] and Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica [ICAC]) as the primary contributors to archaeological research in Catalonia. Finally, we emphasize the pivotal role of the latter in fostering archaeological research scene in Catalonia.
