La logique de la mixité chez les couples franco-maghrébins : entre différenciation et indifférenciation

Abstract

Mixed marriage logical processes in Franco-North African couples : from «cultural obstacle » to cultural indistinction. This article shows how mixed marriage can crystallize indenties while trying to go beyond them. Following a reexamination of the notion of mixed marriage in the social sciences, it will be shown how family disapproval is symptomatic of a referral of spouses back to their putative "roots", helping to create "cultural obstacles" which the couple must negotiate. It will also be seen how conversion to Islam allows such categories to be overcome, while guiding the individuals concerned towards new, imposed identities.
