This study explores urbanization and flood events in the northern coast of Central Java with river basin as its unit of analysis. Two types of analysis were applied (i.e., spatial data and non-spatial data analysis) at four river basin areas in Central Java—Indonesia. The spatial analysis is focused on the assessment of LULC change in 2009–2018 based on Landsat Imagery. The non-spatial data (i.e., rural-urban classification and flood events) were overlaid with results of spatial data analyses. Our findings show that urbanization, as indicated by the growth rate of built-up areas, is very significant. Notable exposure to flood has taken place in the urban and potentially urban areas. The emerging discussion indicates that river basins possess dual spatial identity in the urban system (policy- and land-use-related). Proper land use planning and control is an essential instrument to safeguard urban areas (such as the case study area) and the entire island of Java in Indonesia. More attention should be put upon the river basin areas in designing eco-based approach to tackle the urban flood crises. In this case, the role of governance in flood management is crucial.

Land conversion from agricultural to cement factory and mining areas has consequences for environmental change and degradation that cause disasters and sustainability farmer livelihood. This study aimed to analyze land conversion to a cement factory and mining as determinants of environmental change, environmental change as a determinant of environmental degradation, and the effect of environmental change and environmental degradation on the sustainability of farmer livelihoods. This research used a sequential explanatory design or quantitative rather than qualitative. The research sample totaled 183 respondents. Data collection used the quantitative stage using questionnaires and the qualitative stage using in-depth interviews, observation, and literature study. The results showed that land conversion to a cement factory and mining are causes of environmental change, followed by environmental degradation, such as factory smoke pollution, dust from karst mines, factory vehicle dust, and soil pollution due to coal piles. Environmental change is a cause of environmental degradation, such as crop failure, acute respiratory illness, land clearing, and flooding. The effect of environmental change and environmental degradation on the sustainability of farmer livelihoods is that almost all farmers sell their rice fields for the factory area, then buy ponds, do business, open stalls, and open photocopy businesses. No one returned to being a farmer. The conversion of agricultural land to a cement factory and mining caused a decrease in environmental functions, namely the disruption of the ecosystem chain, which caused flooding and acute respiratory disease and caused farmers to switch to non-agricultural livelihoods.

Progress or Regress? A Systematic Review on Two Decades of Monitoring and Addressing Land Subsidence Hazards in Semarang City

Land subsidence is a major cause of environmental degradation. It increases the exposure of global sea level rise-related disasters in coastal cities lying on young sediment. Ample monitoring, adaptation, and mitigation measures have been taken to tackle the impact of such coastal hazards for decades in Semarang City. However, to date, land subsidence still has a negative impact on people’s quality of life. This brings us to the question of whether the measures are progressing towards better management or going to the opposite side. This paper is aimed to answer that question through an extensive literature review using PRISMA Guidelines to 125 scholarly articles and quantitative supporting analysis. We found that land subsidence is overlooked. Although the monitoring measures are progressing towards better technology utilization, it was not properly integrated into mitigation and adaptation measures. Instead of investing more on developing better urban water management, groundwater extraction still became the preferred water source. Thus, there is a major shift needed with regard to urban activities that need to pay more heed to the environment.
