Successful forest conservation in the tropics depends on various biophysical, socioeconomic, cultural, and political factors. Researchers, environmental practitioners, and local people recognize the need to resolve longstanding systemic weaknesses in environmental governance institutions, to make mainstream environmental policy and action, and to find locally informed and adaptive conservation measures. This also applies to the preservation of cloud-forest fragments of the Taita Hills in southern Kenya, a section of the Afromontane biodiversity hotspot. These forest remnants host many endemic and endangered plant and animal species, and suffer under deforestation and forest degradation. We conducted structured surveys with 300 smallholder farmers living around three forest fragments in the Taita Hills. Our results indicate a lack of knowledge about biodiversity and ecosystem functions among local people. We found an inverse relationship between the level of formal education and practical environmental knowledge, and a bias toward the protection of plant species, because of their provisional ecosystem services, as opposed to the protection of wild animals, because they are mainly associated with human-wildlife conflicts and large-scale tourism. Unresolved human-wildlife conflicts and missing benefit sharing from tourism has created an anti-conservation attitude. Our study underlines that nature conservation is only feasible if the local people benefit from it in the medium and long terms, and if the added value of conservation for high humanlivelihood quality is clearly communicated.

Kulturelle Ökosystemleistungen von Kaya‐Wäldern für die Mijikenda‐Gesellschaft in Kenia trugen dazu bei, dass relevante Teile dieser tropischen Landschaft erhalten blieben, die heute allerdings durch eine wachsende Bevölkerung in Armut starkem Landnutzungsdruck ausgesetzt sind. Mit einem Fragebogen wurden in der Umgebung des Kaya Kambe im Jahr 2022 Daten zum Mensch‐Umwelt‐Verhältnis erfasst. Das Ziel der Untersuchung lag in der Identifikation der Faktoren und deren Interaktionen für die in zwei statistischen Modellen als abhängige Variable definierte Bereitschaft der lokalen Bevölkerung zum Schutz der Kayas. Diese beiden statistischen Modellierungen erfolgten mit Chi Square Automatic Interaction Detection. Hierbei wurden im ersten Modell diejenigen beschreibenden Variablen verwendet, die auch bei der hier nicht dargestellten Hypothesenprüfung auf Grundlage einzelner Kontingenztabellen erfolgte. Dieser die Hypothesenprüfung verifizierende Ansatz wurde durch ein hypothesenexploratives zweites Modell ergänzt. In ihm wurden auch beschreibende Variablen verwendet, die bei der Hypothesenprüfung nicht berücksichtigt wurden. Das erste Modell bestätigt folgende, interagierende Randbedingungen für die Schutzbereitschaft: Wichtigkeit der Kaya‐Bäume, persönlicher Nutzen durch Schutz der Kayas, Wichtigkeit der Kaya‐Tiere und Nützlichkeit der Kayas als Mineralienquelle. Das zweite Modell entdeckt zusätzlich folgende Einflüsse: Zugang zum Kaya, selbständige Baumpflanzung im eigenen Grundstück und im Kaya, monatliches Einkommen, Kenntnis der nationalen Gesetze für die Nutzung der Kayas, kultureller Wert der Kayas sowie Kayas als Energieträger. Aus den Ergebnissen und ihrer Diskussion werden folgende Empfehlungen abgeleitet: Schaffung von Alternativen zur Gewinnung von Bauholz und Brennholz, Beteiligung der lokalen Bevölkerung an einer nachhaltigen Waldbewirtschaftung, Schaffung alternativer Einkommensquellen, Ermöglichung der Wiederaufforstung auf privaten Grundstücken und im Kaya sowie Bildungs‐ und Sensibilisierungsmaßnahmen.

The cloud forests of the Taita Hills are valuable refuges for numerous endemic and rare animal and plant species. They also provide various ecosystem services that support subsistence farming. Due to the large-scale destruction and conversion of these species-rich natural forests into subsistence agriculture and plantations of exotic tree species, most of the natural cloud forest habitats have disappeared and ecosystem services have been significantly diminished. Despite numerous conservation initiatives, the destruction of the Taita Hills forest ecosystem continues, which also lowers livelihood quality of the local people. During a workshop with representatives of GOs, NGOs, researchers and representatives of the local community we identified potential factors which are essential to reverse this negative trend. We found that governance structures urgently need to be strengthened, and that the traditional conservation system needs to get transformed and revitalised. The basic prerequisite is a vital communication among generations, especially between the youth and the elders, as well as and improved communication of scientific knowledge to policy makers and the society. Furthermore, it is essential to harmonize stakeholders’ mandates, policies and actions to efficiently restore this unique forest biodiversity hotspot, and to secure livelihood needs for the local people.
