Land Use and Basin Characteristics Determine the Composition and Abundance of the Microzooplankton

Abstract: The influence of watershed land use on microzooplankton was examined. Six rivers and a shallow lake located in rural (agriculture, livestock) and urban areas were sampled during 4 weeks at low water, low temperatures and 3 weeks at high water, high temperatures. The major aim of this study was to analyze the composition, richness and abundance of the microzooplankton in relation to land use, taking into account nutrient concentration, biological oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), conductivity, pH, transparency, dissolved… Show more

“…Metal concentrations in both water and sediment were lower than those found in previous works in the lower basin of the Salado River and Colastiné-Corralito stream system (Frau et al, 2020;Gagneten & Paggi, 2009;Gagneten et al, 2007;José de Paggi & Devercelli, 2011;Regaldo et al, 2017). According to results obtained in this work, Cr and Pb maximum concentrations in water were 5.67 μg/L and 15.3 μg/L, respectively), surpassing AEQG proposed for the protection of the aquatic biota in 37.5% and 31.3% of the samples, respectively.…”

“…Because of their short life cycles, they respond quickly to environmental fluctuations of natural or anthropic origin (Parmar et al, 2016). The relationship between land use and plankton diversity has been explored in streams, lakes, and rivers of Central East Argentina (Frau et al, 2020;Gagneten & Paggi, 2009; José de Paggi & Devercelli, 2011), but urban aquatic systems remain poorly studied in Argentina and other countries (Kozak et al, 2017;Perbiche-Neves et al, 2013).…”

“…L. quadridentata was highly resistant to DDT and less susceptible to Mn than the cladocerans D. magna [165]. José de Paggi and Devercelli [193] examined the influence of watershed land use on microzooplankton around the city of Santa Fe in Argentina. Six rivers and a shallow lake located in rural and urban areas were sampled during 4 weeks.…”

“…Essa distribuição está associada asseveros custos e benefícios, como a ocorrência da predação, alimentação ótima e condições ambientais (IGLESIAS et al, 2007). Essas interações podem estruturar as comunidades locais (COTTENIE et al, 2003) como de rotíferos, especialmente em lagos ( JOSÉ DE PAGGI;DEVERCELLI, 2011), igarapés e tanques de piscicultura.…”
