Lanthanum delays senescence and improves postharvest quality in cut tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) flowers

Abstract: We tested two sources of lanthanum (La), LaCl3 and La(NO3)3 × 6H2O at a concentration of 40 µM each, in the treatment solution of cut flowers of 15 tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) cultivars. Ascorbic acid (AsA; 0.2 g/L) was used as a reference solution, while distilled water was evaluated as an absolute control. With both La sources, bud length and diameter, and stem length were increased; as a result, stem curvature was also significantly increased with La treatments. The cultivars Laura Fygi and Rosario registe… Show more

“…Conversely, values less than 100 recorded in the roots indicate lower root growth in some treatments where Ce was applied, compared to the control. Lanthanum (La), a member of the REEs, can induce hormetic dose responses in plants [58][59][60][61]. Hormesis is a natural dose response phenomenon characterized by a low-dose stimulation causing positive effects, and a high dose inhibition triggering toxic effects [62,63].…”

“…In addition, nitric oxide [ 21 ] and ubiquitination [ 22 ] as endogenous signal are involved in flower senescence. And the antioxidants, such as nano-silver [ 3 , 23 ], lanthanum [ 24 ] and 8-hydroxychinoline [ 3 , 25 ] delay petal senescence.…”

“…Preservatives comprise commonly used chemicals to delay flower senescence and retain the ornamental value because of their low cost, ease of use, and obvious fresh-keeping effects (G omez-Merino et al, 2020;Rabiza-Swider et al, 2019;Shabanian et al, 2019). For decades, many protocols or preservatives have been developed for several cut flower species, such as rose (Rosa hybrida), carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus), and gerbera (Gerbera hybrida) (Ren et al, 2017;Seglie et al, 2011;Shabanian et al, 2018).…”
