Laparoscopic Anterior Versus Posterior Fundoplication for Gastro‐esophageal Reflux Disease: A Meta‐analysis and Systematic Review

Abstract: Based on this meta-analysis, LPF compared to LAF is associated with significant reduction in heartburn at the expense of higher dysphagia rate on a short- and medium-term basis. We therefore conclude that LPF is a better alternative to LAF for controlling GERD symptoms.

“…More than 50 RCTs have compared various fundoplication procedures, involving thousands of patients and years of follow‐up data. Although the results of many have been pooled in pairwise meta‐analyses, all these have inherent limitations, as they have either combined different fundoplication techniques to allow a head‐to‐head analysis, or compared only two techniques in isolation. It therefore remains difficult, more than 40 years after the first RCT was published, to determine which fundoplication technique is superior, both in terms of reflux control and potential harms.…”

“…Many articles comparing the outcomes of laparoscopic Nissen and Toupet fundoplication have been published [20][21][22][23][24]. In the current study, in terms of indications for redo-ARS, the most common cause of failure of the prior ARS was dislocation of the wrap and recurrence of the hiatal hernia.…”
