Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass for Severe Gastroesophageal Reflux after Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

Abstract: In this patient, laparoscopic re-operative RYGBP produced additional weight loss, and improved gastroesophageal reflux that occurred many years after having a VBG. Laparoscopic conversion of a VBG to RYGBP is feasible, and may confer the benefits of other minimally invasive abdominal procedures to this high-risk patient group.

“…Scientific evidence reveals that a certain number of bariatric patients will fail to lose weight, or to maintain weight loss. If medically indicated and if such a patient is willing, further bariatric surgery should be undertaken (EL B, C, D [132][133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145]). …”

“…It may be possible to remove the obstruction by incising the ring and oversewing the area to prevent leakage. Most clinicians, however, advocate conversion of the vertical banded gastroplasty to a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [12][13][14].…”
