Large and medium-sized mammals of Buenaventura Reserve, southwestern Ecuador

Abstract: Mammals are the third most threatened group of vertebrates and tropical ones are the most endangered according to recent studies. The Buenaventura Reserve protects 20 km 2 of Montane Tropical forest in the southwestern part of the Ecuadorian Andes. This study estimates the mammal species richness of this reserve by using camera traps and occasional sightings. We recorded 20 species of large and medium-sized mammals in this small protected area, which shows the reserve's important role in the conservation of th… Show more

“…In summary, Marmosa perplexa appears to occur in a range of forest types in southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Based on the presence of tree ferns at Punta Santa Ana, the vegetation at the type locality was probably evergreen forest, and descriptions of similar sites in the immediate area (e.g., Robbins and Ridgley, 1990;Torres-Porras et al, 2017) suggest that this humid premontane vegetation is sustained by daily moisture from enveloping clouds. In the adjacent lowlands, M. perplexa seems to occur at drier sites where the forest is at least partially leafless in the dry season.…”

“…Zambrano et al 2019;Solórzano et al 2021). For instance, 183 of the species of mammals, representing 42% of the total number of national mammal species, can be found in Western Ecuador (Tirira 2017). In the case of birds, the Chocó humid region and the Equatorial Pacific dry region harbour more than 450 and 250 bird species, respectively, with an important proportion of regional endemism (Bioweb 2020).…”

“…Its good conservation status has led to the realisation of several scientific studies in the reserve in the last few years in order to assess its biodiversity (e.g. Cogălniceanu et al 2015;Hermes et al 2016Hermes et al , 2018aSzékely et al 2016;Torres-Porras et al 2017;Betancourt et al 2018).…”

“…Mammals are considered the third most threatened and endangered animals, for example, Mantled Hawler Monkey-Alouatta palliata-and Amazonian Tapir-Tapirus terrestris- (Figures 6 and 7) due to habitat loss and destruction, illegal hunting, and trapping [84][85][86]. It has been stated that >30% mammal species are threatened and their population is still declining day by day through a variety of ways [87] ( Table 2).…”
