Large Complex Odontoma : A Report of a Rare Entity = ورم سني مركب كبير : عرض لحالة نادرة

Abstract: abstract:Odontomas are hamartomatous lesions composed of mature enamel, dentin, and pulp, and may be compound or complex depending on the extent of morphodifferentiation or on their resemblance to normal teeth. They are the most common benign odontogenic tumours, constituting 22% of all odontogenic tumours of the jaw. They are often non-aggressive and slow growing in nature, and are usually diagnosed on routine radiological examinations in the second decade of life. We report the case of an unusually large, pa… Show more

“…The evidence demonstrates that they are small (18) and, occasionally, the odontoma exceeds the dimension of the tooth it is retaining (19), confirming the results of the present research, where 60% of odontomas had a size inferior to 10 mm (CO 42%, CxO 18%). Furthermore, D’Cruz et al (21) report that most odontomas measure between 10 to 20 mm; however, sizes bigger than 30 mm have been recorded (20). In the present study, 20% of odontomas (CO=4; CxO=8) measure between 11 to 19 mm, and the remaining 20% (CO=5; CxO=7) represented odontomas bigger than 21 mm (Figures 1 and 2 show CO and COx).…”

“…Most complex odontomas reported in the literature typically measure around 1-2 cm [ 3 ]. A large complex odontoma as in this case (3 × 4.7 cm) is rare [ 4 , 7 , 14 ].…”

“…Based on radiographic and microscopic characteristics, odontomas are subdivided into compound and complex types. The compound type is characterized by tooth-like structures arranged in an orderly fashion and the complex type is characterized by dental tissues in a disorderly pattern without any anatomic resemblance to a tooth [ 3 , 9 14 ]. Odontomas are the most common benign tumors of odontogenic origin.…”

“…However, in our case, presence of unerupted tooth with Complex Odontome was seen. The lesion appears as a more or less amorphous, solitary mass of calcified material [4] . In some cases, the lesion shows a radiating structure.…”

“…They are usually asymptomatic and are diagnosed on routine radiological examination as an incidental finding [1], [3] . Odontomas are further subdivided into compound and complex types depending on the extent of morpho differentiation or on the resemblance to normal teeth [4] . The compound odontome is composed of multiple small tooth like structures, the complex odontome consist of a conglomerate mass of enamel and dentine, which bears no anatomical resemblance to the tooth [3] .…”
