Large scale land investments and food security in agropastoral areas of Ethiopia

Abstract: In Ethiopia, large scale land investments have been expanding into pastoral regions. However, little is known about the consequences of these investments on the food security of the pastoral community. Using Living Standard Measurement Survey data of the World Bank, we find that, on average, about 32% of the respondents from the (agro-)pastoral regions are food insecure. After controlling for confounders, proximity to large scale land investments is associated with additional food intake of up to 745 kcal per … Show more

“…Modelling further suggests that policies promoting bioethanol in China would result in a 5% increase of the world maize. Teklewold ( 2021 ) and Bekele et al ( 2021 ) zoom on Ethiopia. The former article addresses the agricultural growth program and its effects on total factor productivity, while the latter investigates how proximity to large-scale land investments is linked to households’ food intake and coping strategies.…”

“…Teklewold ( 2021 ), unsurprisingly, concludes that there are opportunities to improve productivity growth and food security in smallholder farms through more active research and extension activities. On the other hand, Bekele et al ( 2021 ) conclude that proximity to large scale land investments is associated with increased food intake, but has no significant effect on coping strategies to address food security.…”

“…Aiming to examine the impact of LSAI on the livelihood (the means of gaining a living) of local people in Oromia regional state, Ethiopia, this study employed the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF), binary logistic model, and PSM [23,24]. Several authors have defined the term sustainable livelihood in different ways in connection with natural resource management, agricultural development, poverty alleviation, and food security.…”

“…Moreover, a simple comparison of these two groups may result in serious biases and confusing conclusions. PSM is a pertinent approach to avoid such problems of bias and misleads, as proposed by several authors [24,47,48], and is one of the existing econometric methods to deal with these biases [46]. The model was also fitted to provide a cause and effect explanation in a quasi-experimental design and properly construct statistical treatment and comparison groups [49] and it measures the magnitude of the impact in terms of the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated households (ATT).…”

“…The pace of LASLA has slowed down since 2009 for various reasons. Investors have abandoned many LASLA projects due to unprofitability, inexperience, unfavourable agro-climate and unrealistic assumptions regarding the target crops (Bekele et al, 2021;Hufe & Heuermann, 2017). Moreover, resistance from local people has created problems for investors, including social unrest (Hall et al, 2015;Tafon & Saunders, 2019).…”
