Large‐scale land investments, household displacement, and the effect on land degradation in semiarid agro‐pastoral areas of Ethiopia

Abstract: Agro‐pastoral areas in Ethiopia have been targeted by large‐scale land investments, particularly for the establishment of sugar plantations, since the 1970s. This has led to the displacement of local communities. We investigate the impact of this displacement due to large‐scale land investment on land degradation in semiarid agro‐pastoral areas in Ethiopia. We conducted a survey of 866 households in two agro‐pastoral sites in Ethiopia in 2019, where extensive large‐scale land investment was implemented. We use… Show more

“…Experience from other sources indicated similar findings. Smallholders displaced due to LSAIs were forced to convert pastureland to farmland, reduce the stock size to cope with feed shortage, and this has negatively impacted livestock income ( Zaehringer et al., 2018a , Zaehringer et al., 2018b ; Mekuyie et al., 2018 ; Bekele et al., 2021 ). This implies LSAIs has contributed to de-accumulation of key livelihood assets, which the displaced households could count on at the time of shocks to meet their income need and other means of survival.…”

“…This result further indicates that as the degree of China's industrialization increases, the investment scale increases. Therefore, it is necessary to target a reasonable investment scale to adjust the ratio of investment to consumption in China (Bekele et al, 2020). The Gini coefficients are negatively correlated at a significant level of 1% in the eastern region, and positively correlated at a significant level of 5% in the northeastern region.…”
