“…This is remarkable given that there was a time span of four weeks between the pesticide exposure in larvae and the measures of gene expression in adults, which is almost spanning the total life expectancy of honeybee workers 54 . This indicates that bees that are exposed early in life to a pesticide are substantially more susceptible to environmental stress once they start foraging 55,56 , which could have important ramifications on the colony level if this results in a reduction in total foraging time or efficiency. Future work is therefore required to quantify the effects of pesticide exposure on foraging efficiency and length, for example using already established methods of tracking bees with radio frequency tags in the field 57,58 .…”

“…Papach et al ( 2017 ) present the first evidence of impaired learning and memory in adult bees that were fed thiamethoxam (0.6 ng/bee) during the larval stage. Colony survival critically depends on successful learning and memory.…”

“…In addition, a few other studies have focused on the interaction between the sublethal exposure to neonicotinoids and other pathogens. For example, the combination of the fungus Nosema ceranae and imidacloprid resulted in increased mortality in bees [45], the combination of the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae and thiamethoxam resulted in increased mortality and decreased learning and memory [46], and the combination of black queen cell virus (BQCV) and clothianidin decreased larval survival [47]. These results indicate that there are detrimental effects on the health of honey bees when parasites and pathogens are combined with sublethal exposures to neonicotinoid insecticides, but the interaction can have different outcomes, depending on the biological agent under study, the dose and type of neonicotinoid insecticide, and the aspects of honey bee health measured.…”
