Laser–plasma simulations of astrophysical phenomena and novel applications to semiconductor annealing

Abstract: At the frontier of plasma physics and technology are applications of laser-generated plasmas to laboratory simulations of astrophysical phenomena and to industrial processing. This article presents work at the Naval Research Laboratory in both of these areas. We show how laser plasmas are used to measure a blast wave corrugation overstability important in astrophysics. Detailed atomic physics calculations of radiative cooling within the blast front are used to develop a criterion of the existence of the overst… Show more

“…This approach has been already used to perform plasma jets studies [2 -4]. Astrophysical jet dynamics are affected by many physical phenomena such as radiation [5,6], magnetic fields [7], and interaction with interstellar medium [8]. The complexity of jet evolution theories and simulations needs comparisons with controlled data.…”

“…It is said that the turbulent image of Tyco SNR is due to such instability. Model experiment of the instability has been done with laser blast wave long time ago [95] . More precise experiment has been done to compared to theoretical growth rate of the instability [96] , and also on the stability of bow shock [18] .…”

“…Similarly, the new facility will support experiments on a number of related topics, including laboratory simulations of magnetized jets [18,19], magnetic reconnection [20], and the generation of highly-nonlinear Alfvén waves [21]. The energy in the exploding debris-plasma is initially much higher than the energy stored in the ambient plasma.…”
