An evaluation of the absolute frequency and tunability of collimated blue light (CBL) generated in warm Rb vapour excited by low-power cw laser radiation at 780 nm and 776 nm, has been performed using a Fabry-Perot interferometer and a blue diode laser. For the conditions of our experiments the CBL tuning range is more than 100 MHz around the resonant frequency of the 85 Rb 5S 1/2 (F=3)6P 3/2 (F′=4) transition. A simple technique for stabilizing the power and frequency of the CBL to within a few percent and 10 MHz, respectively, is suggested and demonstrated.

We demonstrate controlled polarization rotation of an optical field conditional on the presence of a second field. Induced rotations of greater than π/2 rad are seen with a transmission of 95%, corresponding to a ratio of phase shift to absorption of 40π . This combination of large, controlled rotation and low loss is well suited for the manipulation of light pulses.

The effect of microwave radiation on the resonance fluorescence of a cloud of cold 85 Rb atoms in a magnetooptical trap is studied. The radiation frequency was tuned near the hyperfine splitting frequency of rubidium atoms in the 5S ground state. The microwave field induced magnetic dipole transitions between the magnetic sublevels of the 5S(F=2) and 5S(F=3) states, resulting in a change in the fluorescence signal. The resonance fluorescence spectra were recorded by tuning the microwave radiation frequency. The observed spectra were found to be substantially dependent on the transition under study and the frequency of a repump laser used in the cooling scheme.
