Latanoprost-Eluting Contact Lenses in Glaucomatous Monkeys

Abstract: Sustained delivery of latanoprost by contact lenses is at least as effective as delivery with daily latanoprost ophthalmic solution. More research is needed to determine the optimal continuous-release dose that would be well tolerated and maximally effective. Contact lens drug delivery may become an option for the treatment of glaucoma and a platform for ocular drug delivery.

“…Given the cornea's superficial and easily accessible location, we could also consider the use of contact lenses as a drug delivery system for LBP. The use of latanoprost-eluting contact lenses has already shown promising results in combating poor long-term drug compliance in glaucomatous optic neuropathy [41]. Furthermore, scleral contact lens systems have been used as a method to effectively deliver bevacizumab to the ocular surface as a method to treat sight-threatening corneal neovascularization [42].…”

“…Ciolino et al tested the effect of latanoprost-eluting contact lenses in a preclinical study with a 3-arm cross-over design. [19] Glaucoma was induced in 4 eyes of female cynomolgus monkeys by repeated argon laser trabeculoplasty. Each monkey wore a continuous-wear low-dose (97 µg) latanoprost-eluting contact lens for 1 week, followed by a washout period of 3 weeks and 5 days of latanoprost topical drops.…”

“…Remarkable hardware-based advances in health care include medicinal contact lenses [Ciolino et al, 2016], tooth sensors [Tseng et al, 2018], and ingestible sensors [Kalantar-Zadeh et al, 2018]. Other astonishing advances include pharmaceutical-related mechanisms such as synthesized antibiotics [Parmar et al, 2016] and cancer vaccines [Sagiv-Barfi et al, 2018].…”
