LATCH Scores and Milk Intake in Preterm and Term Infants: A Prospective Comparative Study

Abstract: High LATCH scores (7-10) may be helpful to determine that infants take at least 50% of the expected breastmilk volume for each feeding in both preterm and term infants. However, LATCH scores cannot substitute for test weights in premature infants because of variability in minimum and maximum milk intake per LATCH score.

“…It should also be determined whether infants are receiving an adequate amount of breast milk according to their postnatal age and weight (Altuntas et al . ). Factors affecting the adequacy of breastfeeding include poor infant attachment to the nipple, not using the correct breastfeeding technique, inactive sucking by the infant, a decrease in the frequency of breastfeeding, milk duct plugging, reduction in milk descent and separation of the infant from its mother; such factors should be assessed by healthcare professionals in the early postpartum period (Ingram , Gross et al .…”

“…It is well-acknowledged that stress can interfere with the neuro-endocrine regulation of lactation both at the level of milk synthesis and milk release/ejection (6,41,46). Although a number of breastfeeding assessment scales have been developed based on a variety of infant behavioral criteria, they are not yet well-recognized (48)(49)(50)(51)(52)(53). This situation is similar to that of feeding therapists' evaluation of infant's bottle-feeding difficulties as lactation consultants' feedback lack objective evidence-based studies supporting their proposed treatment(s).…”

“…Good breastfeeding techniques are the key to the success of early breastfeeding and continuous exclusive breastfeeding. The lack of breastfeeding techniques of the parturient women may lead to many problems such as incorrect breast-feeding posture, wrong breast holding, breast swelling and pain, which may eventually cause the stopping of exclusive breastfeeding [4,5] . The best time to improve the skills of breastfeeding is in the hospital and delivery institution [6] .…”
