Late Quaternary environmental and climate changes registered in lacustrine sediments of the Serra Sul de Carajás, south‐east Amazonia

Abstract: Multi-proxy analyses on sediment cores from two closed basin lakes in the Serra Sul de Caraj as were used to reconstruct environmental changes in south-eastern Amazonia during the late Quaternary. The sediment record between 65 000 and 40 000 cal a BP (older dates with high level of uncertainty) is dominated by organic sediments intercalated with detritus (e.g. Al and Ti), indicating fluctuating lake levels related to changes in precipitation. A period of lower precipitation occurred from 40 000 to 35 000 cal … Show more

“…The interrelation of these factors have controlled the geochemical and limnological characteristics of these lakes through time (Sahoo et al, 2017b). In general, ULs present thick Quaternary deposits with relatively continuous records of paleoenvironmental changes, as such observed in the Morro dos Seis Lagos (northwestern Amazonia), Serras de Maicuru and Maraconaí (northestern Amazonia), and dos Carajás (southeastern Amazonia) (Colinvaux et al, 2001;Bush et al, 2004;Sifeddine et al, 2001;Guimarães et al, 2016;.…”

“…Lake sediment records are valuable archives of past climatic change and the environmental evolution of semiarid and arid regions (F. Chen et al, ; Enzel et al, ; Jones et al, ; Leng & Marshall, ; Mischke et al, ). Changes in the chemical compositions of lake sediments can indicate regional chemical weathering and environmental evolution (Guimarães et al, ; Hahn et al, ; Morrill et al, ; Outridge et al, ). Moreover, the spatial distributions of elements in lake sediments, a powerful indicator of past environmental conditions (Chawchai et al, ; Sahoo et al, ; Tanaka et al, ; Xiao et al, ), can reveal the provenance of sediments and the weathering intensity of their source areas (Allen et al, ; Jin et al, ; Kříbek et al, ).…”
