Lateral alveolar ridge augmentation using a synthetic nano‐crystalline hydroxyapatite bone substitution material (Ostim®). Preliminary clinical and histological results

Abstract: Small amounts of ncHA were found after at least 6 months in bone biopsies. The former defect space was filled with bone. The alveolar ridge width gain was found to be significant after lateral augmentation utilizing ncHA, providing a quantitatively and qualitatively sufficient site for primary stable implant placement.

“…Ostim® can be used in metaphyseal fractures and cysts, alveolar ridge augmentation, acetabulum reconstruction and periprosthetic fractures during hip prosthesis exchange operations, osteotomies, filling cages in spinal column surgery, etc. [609][610][611][612][613][614][615][616][617][618][619][620][621][622]. It might be incorporated into bones and a new bone formation is visible after only three months [623].…”

“…Although this ncHA material is different from microcrystalline bone substitution materials regarding solubility, its chemical composition corresponds to that of bone mineral. The particle size was reported to be 18 nm in average, which allows for an accelerated substitution by vital bone (12). This ncHA material (Ostims, Heraeus Kulzer, Hanau, Germany) has been used in a recently published animal study in adult domestic pigs for observation of the regenerative potential in bony defects.…”

“…Allografts are biomaterials that belong to individuals genetically different but of the same species (Martínez et al, 2011). Thus, allografts and bone substitutes in combination with guided bone regeneration are associated with a clinically important horizontal bone gain for lateral ridge augmentation (Strietzel et al, 2007;Hämmerle et al, 2008). Guided bone augmentation seems to be a good alternative to increased bone quantity, in which a subperiosteal barrier is placed allowing the underlying blood clot to mineralize (Molly et al, 2006).…”
