Lateral Semicircular Canal Plugging in Severe Ménière's Disease

Abstract: Lateral canal plugging is a safe procedure that induces a canal paresis and allows a good control of vertigo. In view of these results, the lateral canal plugging should be a therapeutic option for controlling rotatory vertigo in severe MD.

“…An intralabyrinthine approach was used and postoperative hearing (reported only for 1 out of the 4 implanted patients) was almost totally lost [45,47]. Nevertheless, there are reports showing that hearing is preserved after plugging of a dehiscent superior semicircular canal, plugging of the posterior superior semicircular canal for intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo [64,65], and plugging of the lateral superior semicircular canal in patients with severe Menière's disease [66]. Since most patients suffering from a BVL have normal or near-normal hearing, it is crucial that the incidence of hearing loss upon vestibular implant surgery is thoroughly investigated and reported in the near future.…”

“…Surgical methods include endolymphatic sac surgery (EDS), EDS with steroid [2], vestibular neurectomy, and total canal occlusion [3]. Lateral semicircular canal plugging in severe Meniere's disease was recently reported as a new therapy by Charpiot et al [4]. The data for canal plugging to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) indicated a risk of endolymphatic hydrops [5].…”
