Layered Silicates by Swelling of AMH‐3 and Nanocomposite Membranes

Abstract: Layered materials with nanoporous layers (e.g., , [1][2][3][4] AMH-3 [5,6] ) have structures intermediate between those of crystalline nanoporous frameworks, such as zeolites, and typical layered materials, such as clay minerals. Each layer includes a porous network, while the gallery between layers provides the ability for intercalation, pillaring, and exfoliation. [3][4][5][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] One such material, AMH-3, is the first layered silicate with internal porosity accessible from all directions t… Show more

“…62 These studies on MOF nanosheets draw on earlier concepts of making dispersible exfoliated zeolite nanosheets to apply them as a selective membrane. 23,25,[366][367][368] The same concept is followed when graphene oxide sheets are stacked and form a thin gas selective layer. 61,369 By the sophisticated processing technology, a bricklayer structure of the MOF sheets is formed which is crucial for gas transport through a polymer membrane containing selectively permeable flakes as for the first time proposed in ref.…”

“…Defontaine, et al were able to improve the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of PDMS by 145% with the incorporation of sepiolite [163]. The effect on the H 2 /CO 2 separation in PBI with the addition of sheet like AMH-3 was studied by Choi, et al in 2008. According to their observations, a 3 wt % AMH-3 MMM showed a lowering of CO 2 permeability which resulted in an increase in selectivity from 15 to 40 with respect to the polymer [164].…”

“…The geometry of these fillers is not practically affected by the orientation within the polymer phase but limits the formation of thin selective layers [34]. Recent developments have used high aspect ratio (> 10) sieving materials (usually known as layered materials, fakes or platelets) as alternative fillers to traditional sieves in hybrid membranes [24,[35][36][37]. The features of layered materials such as high aspect ratio and small thickness can improve the separation performance by adding only a small volume fraction of these fillers within the MMM.…”

“…Layered materials can therefore be exfoliated into individual sheets of few-layered nanostructures providing many functional sites which have enormous interest as catalysts [43,44]. They have also been proposed for enzyme immobilization on their very high, hydroxylated and ordered external surface [45], adsorption of carbon dioxide by functionalization [46], and enhancing the selective properties of polymer membranes [35].…”
