“…Symbolic play appeared to be a fundamental element for children to make sense and transform creatively their past and present experiences individually and in group (Deneault et al, 2014; Vygotsky, 1933/1978; Winnicott, 1975), finding some healing resources within themselves and the group in a resilience-oriented perspective (Brymer et al, 2012; Shultz & Forbes, 2013; WHO, 2011). Symbolic play is a channel of expression-elaboration for children, and it is different from other games or activities, which although they have rules and are important socializations means, do not give access to the same psychological processes (Deneault et al, 2014). Other activities favoring alternative forms of symbolic play may have facilitated the same processes, which also explains the variety of activities and modalities used in our workshops.…”

“…Symbolic play is a well-established mean to support children’s intellectual and affective development in both normative situations and traumatic circumstances (Deneault et al, 2014; Vygotsky, 1933/1978; Winnicott, 1975). It was proven effective as part of a prevention intervention with immigrant and refugee youth, as it allowed the transformation of experiences of trauma and losses within a protective and culturally safe space (Rousseau et al, 2005, 2012).…”
