“…The specific type of Mousterian present in Unit 08 cannot yet be precisely determined as the number of artifacts is small (n ¼ 350: among which only one third are larger than 3 cm, Table 2). In Pradel's publications this Mousterian assemblage has been characterized as a "Moustérien sans biface" even if though one biface was recovered during the excavation in the 1950's (Pradel, 1961). This layer has also been characterized as a Quina Mousterian, even if the reasons for making this attribution was not clearly explained but is likely due to the high proportion of scrapers (Lévêque, 1993).…”

“…The Châtelperronian blade cores show a triangular or a rectangular section which is different from the hemi-conical section of Aurignacian cores (Roussel, 2011). The definition of "evolved" Châtelperronian proposed by Pradel (Pradel, 1961(Pradel, , 1963 for this layer cannot for now be accepted or rejected. Comparison with other Châtelperronian layers preserved in a same stratigraphical sequence, such as Quinçay (46 km West of Les Cottés) (Roussel, 2011;Roussel and Soressi, 2010) would help to better evaluate this chrono-cultural attribution.…”

“…Il identifie un niveau moustérien, suivi d'un niveau de « Périgordien II » (1) , surmonté de deux niveaux d'« Aurignacien I évolué » dont le niveau inférieur, qui est ocré dans sa partie supérieure et qui contient une lentille de « Corrézien ». Des éléments dispersés de « Périgordien IVa » sont reconnus au sommet de la coupe (Pradel, 1959 ;1961et 1963.…”

“…The Roches d'Abilly site is located in Central France, along the Creuse Valley (Fig. 1), on the southern limit of the Touraine region, not far from Les Cottés (Pradel, 1961;Soressi et al, 2010) and La Fontenioux (Pradel, 1952), two sites preserved in caves of the Poitoux-Charentes cluster of the Châtelperronian distribution area (Lévêque, 1987;1997;Pelegrin and Soressi, 2007;Bar-Yosef and Bordes, 2010). The Creuse Valley contains several Middle and Upper Palaeolithic occupation sequences conserved in caves, rockshelters, and open-air sites (Allain, 1976;Aubry et al, 2007).…”
