Lead toxicity

Abstract: There is undoubtedly a narrow margin of safety between current occupational blood lead suspension limits and subclinical effect. As a result, the lead users have produced a voluntary Code of Practice with suspension limits significantly below those seen in some national legislation, particularly the Control of Lead at Work Act 2002.

“…While Goyer, 1990 cited that a few Pb studies conducted on females revealed mostly sterility, miscarriages, chromosomal aberration, premature delivery, and infant mortality in humans and animals from exposure in utero [18]. Furthermore, cases of frequent abortions and abnormal menses have demonstrated in woman working in lead based industries [19]. However, Panwar et al, [20] noted that the ovary has an important role in reproduction, as the development, maturation and ovulation of female gametes occur within the ovarian follicles, which is the functional unit of the ovary.…”

“…Cadmium and lead on the other hand have no beneficial effects on human health. Cadmium has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a human carcinogen that can be implicated in various cancers (Järup 2003), while high levels of lead have been found to affect an array of human physiological systems, including renal function, neurological functions and immunological functions (Gidlow 2004).…”

“…In contrast, Pb is non-essential and can be harmful even in low concentrations, and therefore should be avoided in the environment. High concentrations of inorganic Pb in the human body can cause anemia, diarrhea, or can induce coma as well as being carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic for reproduction [1,3]. Although there are various methods to treat heavy-metal-bearing wastewater, Fu and Wang [4] rate environmental pollution with heavy metals as one of the most severe issues today.…”
