“…A similar change in the direction of vascular maturation in the leaf primordium related to apical maturation and basal growth was described for Tradescantiu (Scott & Priestley, 1925), Zea (Sharman, 1942), Lolium (Forde, 1965) and Narcissus (Denne, 1960). In Tradescantia some of the primary lateral bundles mature both from the tip downwards and from the base upwards, so that the last part of the procambium to mature is in the midregion of the primordium.…”

“…A comparison of these results with the descriptions of the development in other Monocotyledons, e.g. Scott & Priestley (1925) for Tradescuntia, Sharman (1942) for Zea, allows some interpretation of these bundle structures and arrangements, although I myself did not undertake any original developmental studies of the Zingiberaceae. The large bundles which form the main arc evidently develop early and basifugally, their protoxylem maturing while longitudinal extension is still in progress.…”

“…Xylary differentiation in Tradescantia leaves as reported by Scott and Priestley (1925) differs from that in Phleum first in the lack of a distinct center of xylary initiation at the leaf apex, and second in the fact that within the laterals acropetal development of protoxylem precedes the basipetal development of later formed tracheids.…”
