Leaf-Footed Bugs (Coreidae)

Abstract: The family Coreidae is distributed worldwide, but these phytophagous bugs are most abundant in the tropics and subtropics. In the Neotropical region, all of the subfamilies and 16 tribes are represented. In tropical ecosystems, these bugs feed on herbs and shrubs in open areas of forests as well as at the forest edge. Some species are spectacularly colored, and unusual expansions of antennae, humeral angles, femora, or tibiae occur in many groups. Some of them move lazily even when disturbed and hardly fl y to… Show more

“…4). Transitions to vertically transmitted symbionts have been suggested to be driven by evolutionary pressures tied to specialization (35,66), but many heteropteran plant specialists retain environmentally acquired symbioses (6,67), suggesting a more nuanced evolutionary explanation. Comparative approaches focused on sister groups with different transmission strategies in the Heteroptera may yield useful biological correlations, although many additional phylogenetic and biological data will be required.…”

“…Several species are considered to be major agricultural pests (Mitchell, 2000), for example the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris, which is also a model organism for symbiont research (Mitchell, 2000;Takeshita & Kikuchi, 2017). Members of this superfamily also include some of the largest, robust, terrestrial heteropterans and several brightly coloured species (Fernandes, Mitchell, Livermore, & Nikunlassi, 2015;Schuh & Slater, 1995). Within this group, there is also diversity of body forms, varying from slender and elongate to large, foliaceous or winglike expansions on the body and/ or legs (Schuh & Slater, 1995).…”
