Leakage channel fibers with microstuctured cladding elements: A unique LMA platform

Abstract: Abstract:We present a novel design of leakage channel fiber (LCF) that incorporates an air-hole lattice to define the modal filtering characteristics. The approach has the potential to offer single-mode, large mode area (LMA) fibers in a single-material platform with bend loss characteristics comparable to all-solid (LCFs) whilst at the same time providing significant fabrication benefits. We compare the performance of the proposed fiber with that of rod-type photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and all-solid LCFs o… Show more

“…Typically, an important branch of geometric structure engineering is promoting the resonance between HOMs in the central core and the lateral structures, for example, the trench-assisted fibers [32, 34, 38-40, 42, 206-222], chirally coupled-core fibers (CCCF) [29,[43][44][45][217][218][219][220][221][222][223][224][225][226][227][228][229][230][231][232][233][234][235], leakage channel fibers [30,[230][231][232][233][234][235][236][237][238][239][240][241][242][243][244][245], and large pitch fibers [31,246,247], etc. Compared with conventional SIFs, the cladding regions of these functional fibers are modified to non-uniform structures with lateral structures surrounding the central core, leading to a resonant coupling of the HOMs in the main core into the lateral structures.…”

“…Such rod-type fibers generally should be kept straight to avoid bend distortion, so it is not compact in practical applications. The leaky channel PCF offers a better bend tolerance with the potential of single-mode output and large mode area [69] . Depending on the surrounding region, there are mainly three approaches to realize effective single-mode LMA operation [70] .…”

“…The world manufacturers of FOSs are Siemens (Germany), Backer Hughes (USA), Halliburton (USA), Schlum-berger (USA) Emerson Electric Co. (USA), and Russian enterprises "Omega", "Optolink", "Intel-Systems". The volume of the FOD sales market for extreme conditions, according to estimates by the American business consulting company Frost & Sullivan (USA), in 2011 amounted to about $ 1,200 billion and, according to the forecast, by 2020 will grow to $ 8.5 billion [1].…”
