Learning and teaching phonetic transcription for clinical purposes

Abstract: This paper explores the theoretical issues surrounding clinical phonetic transcription which are pertinent to the education of speech and language therapy students. It draws on theoretical literature and practical experience, to consider issues of rationale, timing, structure, and content of courses in phonetic transcription for clinical purposes, and explores the problems and pitfalls inherent in the process. It is not a tutorial in clinical practical phonetics, but an examination of the issues which teachers… Show more

“…While a thorough auditory-perceptual assessment is indispensable and supersedes any instrumental measures [1], quantitative instrumental measures serve to corroborate and augment the perceptual assessment [5,6]. A commonly used instrumental adjunct to the assessment of oral-nasal balance is the nasalance measure obtained with a nasometer or similar instrument.…”

“…Video recordings (not available in this study) may favor the identification of some co-productions of this nature, since the visual context of place of articulation can be combined to the auditory-perceptual information 22 . Some productions which may not be observed, even when combining the auditory-perceptual to the visual-perceptual ratings, still may be captured by the equipment 23 .…”

“…Narrow phonetic transcriptions address the issue of symbol ambiguity and provide a system for describing all phoneme possibilities and distortions (Powell, 2001); however, it has been reported in the literature that most clinicians have little experience with narrow transcription and may find the approach intimidating, time-consuming and cumbersome (Howard & Heselwood, 2002; Powell, 2001). With increasing caseload demands, most clinicians often do not have time for what may be perceived as the extra work involved in completing narrow transcriptions.…”
