Learning from the crowd while mapping to LOINC

Abstract: When information about other institutions' mappings was made available, study participants who accessed it agreed that it was useful and informed their mapping choices. Our findings suggest that a crowd-sourced repository of mappings is valuable to users who are mapping local terms to LOINC terms.

“…We assume that this is due to the high heterogeneity of data elements present in LOINC. We also considered using RELMA [10], which offers an automatic suggestion of mappings, but unfortunately does not allow multi-user workflows as mentioned in our requirements. We suspected that most of the work consists of researching content, but not in selecting the "best" match.…”

“…The task of creating mappings in general is a recurring challenge. Regarding LOINC, there are tools such as RELMA [10], however, to the best of our knowledge, there is no tool yet that allows multiple users to work in parallel on a mapping project. To tackle this problem, we implemented a generic collaborative terminology mapping application.…”

“…The LOINC system covers almost all laboratory observations, by reflecting changes in laboratory tests, and serves widely as the standard of information exchange between health institutions. More than 164 countries have used LOINC, and over 25 countries, including the United States, have adopted LOINC as a national standard ( 10 ). LOINC was developed by the civil institute, and Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) was developed by the United States government.…”

“…Within the USA, the Meaningful Use incentive program requires LOINC in messages reporting laboratory test results, exchanging medical summaries, and sending data to cancer registries and public health agencies. About 20 U.S. federal agencies have adopted LOINC in various programs 33 . The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be requiring LOINC for lab test data in regulated studies starting after March 2020, and they have articulated a broad vision of using real-world evidence in post market surveillance that depends on standardized data.…”
