Learning Obstacle on Addition and Subtraction of Primary School Students: Analysis of Algebraic Thinking

Abstract: This study aims at exploring learning obstacles about arithmetic operations, and problems of addition and subtraction of whole numbers in primary schools. This preliminary qualitative research used a didactic research design. The participants of this study were 50 second-grade students at primary schools in three regencies. The instruments used were test and nontest. The test technique was conducted by giving questions about algebra, whereas the nontest technique was in the form of interviews. The data were an… Show more

“…Meanwhile, in the learning process, students have not been intensively exposed to these didactic situations. This shows that there are learning obstacles caused by limited problem contexts presented during the learning process yang (epistemological concept) and limited didactic situations that can facilitate students to develop high-level thinking skills (didactical obstacle) (Sulastri, et al 2022;Sidik, et al 2021).…”

“…Epistemological obstacles (obstacles of epistemological origin) are essentially someone's knowledge that is only limited to specific contexts. If the person is exposed to a different context, his knowledge becomes unusable, or he needs help with using it (Brousseau, 1997;Suryadi, 2013;Syahril et al, 2021).…”

“…The first stage involves analyzing the didactic situation before the learning process or carrying out didactic design hypothetical, which cover. Anticipation of Pedagogical Didactics (ADP) (Sidik, 2021;Suryadi, 2013). The second stage is known as analysis metapedidactic, which is essentially a situation analysis didactic-pedagogical.…”
