“…Most of the studies in lectin biology have been on their agglutination, immunomodulatory and cytotoxic properties (Liener et al, 1986;Gabius and Gabius, 1993;Vijayakumar et al, 1994) and are mostly confined to cancer biology, because significant alterations in the composition of cellular glycoconjugates have been shown more often in malignant conditions than in other disease states . Reviews and monographs on the use of lectins in histopathology are available and are recommended reading to get wider perspectives on lectin histochemistry (Liener et al, 1986;Caselitz, 1987;Damjanov, 1987;Alroy et al, 1988;Danguy et al, 1988;Gabius, 1988;Sharon and Lis, 1989;Walker, 1989;Gabius and Gabius, 1991;Vierbuchen, 1991;Spicer and Schulte, 1992;Gabius and Gabius, 1993;Danguy et al, 1994;Vijayakumar et al, 1994).
