Lectins from Synadenium carinatum (ScLL) and Artocarpus heterophyllus (ArtinM) Are Able to Induce Beneficial Immunomodulatory Effects in a Murine Model for Treatment of Toxoplasma gondii Infection

Abstract: Infection by Toxoplasma gondii affects around one-third of world population and the treatment for patients presenting toxoplasmosis clinically manifested disease is mainly based by a combination of sulfadiazine, pyrimethamine, and folinic acid. However, this therapeutic protocol is significantly toxic, causing relevant dose-related bone marrow damage. Thus, it is necessary to improve new approaches to investigate the usefulness of more effective and non-toxic agents for treatment of patients with toxoplasmosis… Show more

“…Furthermore, the life span of ArtinM-stimulated neutrophils decreased [42]. Additionally, in a murine model of Toxoplasma gondii infection ArtinM induced the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and increased NO levels as well as reducing the parasitic load [43].…”

“…Although a few antiviral drugs were approved by the FDA for COVID-19 treatment, the search for compounds with anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity is still a main global purpose. In this context, the lectins isolated from plants are proteins with broad applicability in biotechnology [ 78 ], and they can be used against different infections, such as protozoa, bacteria, and viruses [ 79 , 80 , 81 ]. These molecules act as carbohydrate-binding agents and are able to bind to glycans on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, altering the viral glycoprotein spike 3D conformation and tricking the interaction with the ACE2 cell receptor [ 82 ].…”

“…Bone marrow cells were isolated as described previously (Weischenfeldt and Porse, 2008 ; de Souza et al, 2016 ). Femurs and tibias from mice were removed, disinfected by immersion in 70% ethanol and the ends of each bone were cut.…”
