Left atrial pressure as predictor for recurrence of atrial fibrillation after pulmonary vein isolation

Abstract: LA pressure, AF type, and LA volume index are independent predictors for recurrence of AF after PVI. LA pressure may be helpful especially in patients with small atria, where AF type is not predictive.

“…Comparing the AUC, the mLAP showed a better correlation with AF/AT recurrence than the meLAP (AUC mLAP=0.75 vs AUC meLAP=0.73). These findings are in line with results, which have been published recently [21,22]. The studies also evaluated the role of LAP in context of AF/AT recurrence after PVI.…”

“…The maximum LAP (LAP max) was defined as the maximum height of the v wave, and the minimum LAP (LAP min) was defined as the minimum of the x trough. The mean LAP was defined using the following formula: LAP min + 1/3(LAP max – LAP min) based on the average of 5 heartbeats . The systolic AP, diastolic AP, and mean AP were measured in SR and AF using the same method.…”

“…A study by Linhart et al . has reported LAP as a useful predictor for recurrent AF after CA, especially in patients with small atria . The patients who undergo CA for AF mostly have normal left ventricular (LV) function and smaller LA size than patients with chronic AF.…”

“…Other data with possible prognostic impact such as AF burden (including AF duration), sleep apnea, LA fibrosis, LA pressure and LA shape were not systematically collected, and several patients were lost to follow-up [34,35]. Different methods were used to assess LA volume and to perform PVI, although these did not seem to affect the results.…”
